What would be a good business to start in Blairstown?

My husband and I are thinking of starting a new business locally but we're having a hard time deciding what would work here. We'd love some input.

That's a tough one. Everyone seems to want a gym. A good bakery would be nice. A ShotRite or Wegmans instead of the A&P. A health food restaurant or Thai restaurant.

A bakery would be great. A small shoe and clothing store would be nice also. A gym would be fantastic too!

I agree with the ShopRite or better yet, Wegmans idea. I constantly hear from locals how much they dislike the A&P. I know my family does. They need some good competition around here.

The Azeneca center runs aerobics classes if you are interested.

something for families and teens to do. Bowling alley, small movie theater, or another pool hall. In order to have a good business there needs to be a good location for at least a pool hall the fountain mall wasn't a good location and I know there are many many people that love to play pool but do not want to go driving over a half hour away just to play!

Someplace w/ a DRIVE THRU to get coffee /bagel in the morning. Doesn't have to be Dunkin or Starbucks. I have 2 kids under 4 and it is very inconvenient to stop and walk in because I'd have to schlep them w/ me and usually don't have the time for that in the AM.
Or like anonymous said something for families and tweens. I thought the Old A&P would have been a great place for that...skating rink / bowling / pool hall, etc...

While we don't have a bakery in town, we do have a baker. The Cupcake factory does sell baked goods. We haven't tried anything yet, BUT, the owner, Jill, is bringing some samples to us tomorrow to American Advantage Mortgage (formerly the office of JDJ Financial) at 1048 Route 94, Marksboro. We'd like to get them out to local folks! Call us at 362-6684 if you would like to stop by for a sample!

Oh, and I agree about a good Thai restaurant, or maybe even a restaurant that just sells salads and health foods. A book trading store (I've got hundreds of paperbacks)
Or, a movie theatre. That would be good. I truly dislike having to drive down to Rockaway for a nice theatre.

Jill from the Cupcake Factory is bringing us some samples to try. If you're in the area of Marksboro today stop in to pick up a little something.
We're at Mile marker 12 on 94. Small blue building near the old Marksboro Church. American Advantage Mortgage

Try www.TheCupcakeFactory.net. Have ordered several times. Great stuff and local in town. You just have to order what you want.

Movie Theater

A good restaurant, my advice forget about fancy or alternate food like Thai...I suggest a restaurant that the folks around here can bring the entire family to for a reasonable price. I don't know of a place like this other than Luigi's Rancho out on 46 in Belvedere. They have a large enough place where they can accomodate the family. There is nothing like that out here other than the Hardwick House which is overpriced.

What I have noticed there are no Sporting Goods stores. I travel to Simon Peters in Newton to get fishing/hunting equip. With a regional HS, I think a good All Sports store may work. I heard there was a fishing store in the past but never made it.

There have been a couple Sporting Goods stores here in the past. When I was a kid there was Rich's World of Sports which carried baseball/softball/soccer/basketball/football supplies, and if memory serves me correctly he also had hunting/fishing supplies. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. That store used to be in the strip mall with Dominick's Pizza and then moved into the strip mall across from the A&P before eventually closing. The other Sporting Goods store I don't know much about other than that it was a hunting/fishing supply store, not the other kind. This one was also in the strip mall with Dominick's Pizza, but many years after Rich's World of Sports had closed.

I honestly don't think a store like this would prosper in Blairstown. Dicks, Models, and Sports Authority aren't so far away that people mind driving to them. I can't see a sporting goods store selling enough to cover the rent and still make a profit.

I vote for Thai food myself. Though I don't mind the ride to Thai Thani on Rt 611 just over the border.

as another anti-A&P'r, WEGMANS would be awesome

or something like the Grist Mill in Andover for coffee, sandwiches, open mike...

a ladies "tea spot" (where cocktails are served in tea cups)

would hate to take business away from Saen Thai in Shawnee, but an Ethiopian place?? yum
